For those of you who are into hunting, overlanding or for whatever reason spend any measurable time off-road in your vehicles, what tires do you use? Here in SW Idaho mud isn't a substantial consideration for me, but I'm thinking even in the NC mountains the story has to be different down South.

Thank you for your input.

4Runner TRD Pro: Nitto Terra Grapplers (stock, minor off-roading)
Jeep Wrangler: 35" Mickey Thompsons (medium modified, a bit more serious off-roading)

Came from FL where Sand and Mud are the name of the game.
Here in WNC, there is definitely mud, but not the swampy morass in FL (where a snorkel is a good idea). As you might expect, I have found trails much more rocky in WNC than in FL. In addition, the soil composition in WNC can be extremely slippery when wet, and when combined with the uneven ground - a recipe for getting into trouble.

In WNC, in addition to tough tires and capable suspension, I highly recommend a top quality winch, pulleys and tree straps. On several occasions I have found myself using my winch, straps and pulleys to negotiate inclines - especially coming down. Tires might get you up a slippery section (or if you're not careful you might slide sideways into a tree or off a cliff), but IMO coming down that incline can be the real white knuckle ride. No pride here - I don't hesitate to back down a slippery incline with a winch, straps and pulleys. And that's just getting around on some parts of my property!

Oh...and having on-board air (CO2 tank for me) is never a bad idea. Airing down for the trail can save bumps, bruises and punctures...but once you hit pavement, need to re-inflate!

2010 4Runner, 2 inch lift. Nitto Terra Grappler G2, load range E. I run them at 48 to 50 psi on the road, down to 32 when driving around the ranch I go to most often. Next set will probably be Nitto Ridge Grapplers.
