Almost that time of the year. An orchard in Flat Rock was recently voted the 4th best orchard in America by USA Today readers.

We visited Granddad's orchards near Hendersonville a year ago and we thought that was very nice.

There are many apple orchards here. We love to drive around the countryside and view the orchards, especially this time of year.

September is probably the peak apple month. Very early apples start producing in June! Honeycrisp and Gala are ripe in August. October is late for many varieties. My mama's family in SW VA used to grow little June apples. Her fave was the Stayman Winesap, though, and that's an October apple.

Good list of when they ripen here on Skytop's site, but most of the orchards have a similar list of what varieties they grow and when they ripen.

If you wanna pick 'em don't delay! They'll be gone soon.

I love the concept but not the product - well, at least for eating apples. They're fine for baking or apple sauce but for eating out of hand I want a northern grown apple, WA preferably but MI apples are also good.

We hit our local Waynesville Barber Orchard for a couple of good sized bags, a month ago...
I eat one 3-4 times a week while chasing the ball.

We store them in lower bin of reefer and they last a long time...

We were pretty disappointed when we went to the one in Morganton as only a very small section of the orchard was open. We didn't know about the ripening times until the next time we came and saw the sign with the dates. Most of the varieties were still not ready in early Sept.

I like the honey crisp and the gala. We also like using them to make apple pie.

Thanks for the Skytop link. This is very helpful.

Pot keeps apples fresher longer?

Went to three orchards today with my sister who is visiting from out of town. They were ALL packed.
