Our forum friends GuyFriendly--and Mrs. Friendly--left AZ today driving a 24-foot truck with a car trailing behind--!. They are staying just beyond El Paso, Texas this Sunday night.
Bill and I are of course aware of the BIG ROCK SLIDE on I-40 between NC and TN, but we only vaguely recall there was some OTHER highway closure in this region. In any case and regardless of what we know or don't know, we are too new here to be able to advise GuyFriendly as to how best to proceed, given CURRENT ROAD CONDITIONS. (Weather forecasts seem friendly.)
WILL YOU PLEASE HELP?? GuyFriendly hopes to be able to access this forum at the end of each day (in any case, we can, and we will be in frequent touch with him). Please give him exact directions, knowing what you know about road closures or other conditions(!!!), considering what they're driving(!!!), from Texas to East Asheville.
Their ultimate destination is our home off of Tunnel Road/Highway 70, just east of the Folk Art Center on the Parkway.
Many thanks, and may God bless you!!
Jan & Bill

I can guarantee you that the highway department already has the detour signs in place and have been re-routing traffic for weeks now. All they'll need to do is follow the signs. The only problem they'll encounter will be traffic delays.
From El Paso, they just need to go east about 100 miles and take the I-20 split off I-10, and I-20 will take them straight to Atlanta GA. Then take I-85 north to where I-26 is, in Spartanburg SC. Go north/west on I-26 and, as you know, I-26 goes right up past Hendersonville and on into Asheville. You can tell them directions from there. This way of going via Atlanta keeps them on flat roads and no big mountains to deal with until they go up I-26.

Safe traveling Guy and Mrs. Friendly - Jan, let us know when they arrive safely, okay? And where are they going to fit a 24' truck in your neighborhood??
We got permission from our HOA to park the truck on the street beside our driveway while professionals unload it into our garage. Then Guy will park it in an unused lane just down the hill from our house until it is returned to the rental agency (by this Saturday). All of this approved in advance.
We'll let all of you know when they arrive. They're not driving in a hurry, thankfully--won't be here before Thursday, I would imagine.
You could also take I-20 to Dallas and pick up I-30 East and follow to I-40 East and then pick up I-81 North to I-26 East to Asheville. This would be a much more scenic route, but would add a little bit of travel time probably.
