I would recommend to the OP to stay away from Milwaukee.

You already seem to like football, so you have that going for you....I can't stand football, I don't know if a lot of women like football though.

Why? Every single city in the world has sketchy & not sketchy areas. This is not restricted to only Milwaukee. Every single city. Stick to the east side, riverwest, downtown, bayview, they'll be fine. Move to areas of the south side or north side or central & yeah, crime. It's not hard to avoid living in those areas if you choose not to.

There are Democrats!

I'm wondering where there are safe Republican cities that are cool and fun. Never heard of one. Austin is the only decent city in TX and that is overrated. Nashville maybe? Don't know their politics.

Hello OP, I am a young Wisconsin resident who just graduated and I am employed so perhaps I can relate. Please ignore the nimrods bringing up politics in this thread. Wisconsin is highly polarized in many areas of politics and it gets very bad around election year. I hope it doesn't bother you.

At any rate, Wisconsinsites are a very friendly bunch. (politics aside) Common social events typically revolve around drinks with co-workers, friends and colleagues. Everyone loves playing sports, though the type will differ by area.

To give you an idea of what you might like:

Fox Valley: Where I currently live. (Oshkosh to be specific) It consists of Oshkosh, Fon du Lac, Neenah, Menasha, Appleton, Kimberly, Kaukauna and everything in-between. All cities range from 20k to 80k in population. Overall, the entire fox valley area consists of about roughly 250,000 people. (I would have to double check that) Cities are generally close to each other with about 20-30 minutes driving at the most usually. All situated on a large fresh water lake. (Winnebago) More "suburban" feeling in some parts but the downtowns in Oshkosh and Appleton are rather nice with plenty of farmer's markets and other events to go to. Cost of living is cheap and job market here is alright. People are friendly for the most part but you will find the environment to probably be slightly xenophobic and conservative. UW Oshkosh makes Oshkosh slightly more left than the rest of the area. (Along with blue collar setting in some parts)

Milwaukee: Large city, lots to do, etc. Cost of living isn't bad considering the size of the place. Lots of jobs in industry based businesses, as well as some federal agencies being based there for the state itself. The city is very democratic but not as socially liberal as Madison. Main issue is crime, as the city still suffers from the economic setback and financial crisis. Bad parts are easy to avoid however. Beautiful lakeview front.

Madison: Great cost of living and generally low crime. Very socially liberal populace. Local orientated with focus on organic home-grown products and supporting local industry. UW Wisconsin is based here and brings a large diverse student body, though a bit snobbish. City is fairly condensed and walkable. Great nightlife, given the young crowd. Lots of jobs in both public and private sectors. Relatively low crime, especially in comparison to Milwaukee.

These are the areas I know best. As far as cold weather goes, I hope you like it VERY cold in winters. The Polar Vortex is due to come back again and bring us a bitter winter during January.

Isn't Austin the only democratic city in TX? Keep Austin Weird, lol. Love that slogan. Still not enough reason for me to move to or visit TX.

Look at the detailed FBI report, I also said madison is the EXCEPTION, it is a democrat city, but is much much better then Milwaukee. I knew what I said would be taken out of context.

I wouldn't recommend any part of milwaukee to the OP. If milwaukee is doing so awesome, why can my significant other and I, buy a house for $1,500 in milwaukee with no problem in October...But we won't. I won't recommend a dangerous city to someone.

Buy a house for $1,500? Really. Sure. You don't live here so really, you have no say in the matter. You live over an hour away. How often do you even VISIT Milwaukee? Do you know bayview? No. Do you know the east side? No. Do you know downtown? No. Do you know areas of Riverwest? No. Please refrain from claiming Milwaukee is such a big bad city & you wouldn't recommend ANY area to others without knowing what you are indeed talking about. Those of us who actually live work & play in Milwaukee know more about it than you do. Thanks!
