I have an elderly family member in Whitewater, WI. She has a land line phone and service with AT&T. Her current bill is $76. Seems her basic service charges are $45 then another $22 for basically $2 in ld calls. Then the "bend over and smile" fees/taxes/etc. This is completely ridiculous. Does anyone here know anything she can do to reduce this in any way? It should be illegal to charge the elderly more than $10 a mo for land line phone service.

Thanks for any input.

Unfortunately there may not be many options for truly cheap phone service as it seems the only way to save on phone is bundling it with their other services often defeating the purpose. Perhaps AARP would have a low cost mobile plan that could work better. Note to check into any existing contract they may have with ATT to avoid potential huge cancel fees. Only things i could add would be if they happen to have internet service look into voip phone like vonage; or to contact ATT and explain the situation to see if they will work with you/them. Good luck!

AT&T is trying to get itself out of the landline business.

AT&T's Plan For the Future: No Landlines, Less Regulation - WSJ

Your neighbor should consider getting inexpensive broadband (Maybe AT&T DSL?) and going with a super-cheap digital phone service like Free Home Phone Service | Ooma.

Cell phones are landline phones...without a cord. No matter how old you are, you are better off with a cell.

I love my landline. I pay $18 a month with Frontier which is the only choice I have. It is a stripped down plan with no long distance service. My parents out in Maine pay $16 for the same thing.

Is she on low income? A fixed income? You can call the phone companies and get a reduced rate if you are on Medicare (elderly), medicaid, etc.. they will lower the bill to under $20 a month total if you can prove she has a low fixed income and needs that help in bill reduction. Go to At&T website and look for anything that says low income bill assistance, etc.

If she is wealthy or owns a lot of assets then not likely to happen.. good luck..
