Hello! We are considering a move to the Wausau area (anywhere within 30 minutes or so). My husband is a heavy equip operator here in SoCal, but willing to do just about anything if the pay is right. How hard do you think it would be to find a job making $18+ an hour w/ benefits for someone w/o a college degreee, but 10 years in the construction business.

Almost forgot, my hubby also has a Class A driver's lic, so he could drive for a living too, but doesn't want anything where he is gone more than 2 nights a weeks, so a local opportunity would be best.

WH Transportation is always looking for drivers. I know they need drivers to deliver their homes and most of that is within the state.

I haven't had luck finding union truck driving jobs in Wisconsin. One guy I met has been driving a fuel truck for the same company for 20 years. he made $11 an hour and was glad to get it. I've known a number of union equipment operators from Wisconsin who commute to Illinois to work. Over $40 and hour compared to $14 an hour.

Try having a Master's degree and finding a job in Wisconsin! That doesn't help either! I applied for a library aid job at a local school, an $11.00 an hour job, and was told I was one of 90 applicants but I should feel priviledged because I was one of the 20 that they interviewed. I didn't get any farther with getting the job though so too bad can't put "priviledged" in the bank! I thought there were jobs here too. There seems to be more jobs but there are also a ton more people applying for those jobs so it isn't any better than anywhere else. I wish I knew a state where jobs were actually plentiful as I can't seem to find ANYTHING here.

There are a good number of factories in the Wausau area, the most prominent of which is probably Marathon Cheese, which pays even its part-timer entry-level workers over $13/hr. Linetec or Eastbay may be good choices too.
