I am seriously thinking about volunteering.

I think that, by volunteering, I will have something nice to put down on my resume and application.

When some of you volunteered, how many hours a week did you devote to volunteering?

I think it would depend entirely on your schedule and the type of volunteering.

You volunteer as much as you want.

When I was in college I volunteered 4 hrs/wk, but I would do it in one day. The duration would go for a semester. Last year when I was volunteering it was on a weekly basis for an hour or two after work or on the weekend. I don't think it really matters for your CV. Just put your start and finish dates on there.

I don't volunteer on a weekly basis. But whenever there is a disaster, I take a month off and volunteer at the red cross. I generally manage the supply distribution chain. I took off 3 months last year to do so for Japan's earthquake. I don't put it on my resume however.

The Red Cross has supply ships leave from the east coast, so it's fairly convenient for me to volunteer in this manner. I don't know much about what you can volunteer for on a weekly basis. Most likely local community efforts.

As much or as little as you can or want. My volunteer work and the contacts made through it has been of huge help to me over the years in so many different ways. Job offers, business customers - networking doesn't get any better than that! When anybody on this forum poo-poos the notion of volunteerism as a networking tool and a resumé plus I just sit back and shake my head in total bewilderment at such abject stupidity. And the personal satisfaction in doing something to better another's life is priceless.

Do what feels right and fits into your schedule. If that is an hour doing story time every other week at the local library, so be it. If you are unemployed and can work 10-20 hours a week at the local food pantry, they'd love to have you. There is not a magic number.

I have a regular weekly three hour a week hospital shift, then I'm on call for the family crisis unit. I also lead a once a month bone builders class. I also am on the Hospital BOD auxialry that meets once a month.

You can do it on as little as 4 hours each week. I volunteer every Sunday morning, and I get to see the same folks each time. As a result, I've made good friends and fellow volunteers who will give me a very solid reference should I ever need one. But if you do this, you have to make sure you are 110% committed to showing up when they expect and need you. Pick a cause you really care about, for me it was animal welfare.
