Newspaper jobs will not return my call (hire, office, good)

I am trying to get a job as a newspaper deliverer. I call
to ask to get a route and no matter what time of day it is I
always get a voicemail. I leave a voicemail and I never get a
return call. What's wrong? These jobs use to be easy to snag
now I can't even get a return call. The hours are bad and the
pay is low so why are these people so difficult to reach and
get a job with?

Maybe they hire people that want a job bad enough to go to the office instead of just using the phone.

I did go up there. They gave me a phone number and told me to go home
and call the number if I want a job with them. I called once, twice; left a
message both times, no answer.

That's a terrible way to do things. I think they could be more honest with you. Keep trying and good luck!
