Many years ago i had a buddy who had a buddy who was a head hunter. I needed a job and my pal said that his pal can get me a interview/job. I was like "great". So, time goes by and i never hear from this headhunter at all. I say to my friend "tell you buddy that if he gets me an interview and i get the job, i'll pay him cash on the spot"
Needless to say, my phone rang the next day and i had an interview all lined up.
See a job you want? Show up with a roll of hundreds and tell the interviewer that you are REALLY interested in this position.
I have never thought paying anybody to get a job interview. The recruiters call me every week. They even contact me through my employer. They been looking me up on Linkedin. They call the company mainline and ask for me.
What the hell? That's so intrusive. I would pay extra money for them to leave me alone. I would just end up with a different head hunter calling next week.
I want my former co-workers to stay in contact with me, so I won't take down my profile.

Youre not paying them for the interview, you're paying them if you actually GET the job.
I wouldn't pay for the job either. It would have to be for a $35k raise with no overtime, or it's pointless. They get paid by the company, when they place me.

It's not bribing. Headhunters make a percentage. Sometimes the entire fee is paid by the employer, sometimes it is split, and sometimes the employee pays. What happened with the OP (even though he doesn't realize it) is he let the headhunter know that he was willing to consider positions where the employer wasn't paying the fee. And if the employer was paying the fee, the headhunter got paid double. Nobody could get away with this at a company's recruiting department though. It only works with headhunters.
Since the interviewer is the one who makes the decision to hire and not the headhunter it's seems like a sucker deal to pay a headhunter. If the hiring manager picks you it's because of you not the headhunter. So why pay the headhunter to do what they do anyway which is submit your resume.
Hey, I got a bridge for sale. It's at a great price. Call me.
