There are plenty of unskilled jobs that you can make more money doing...sometimes a lot more.

Read a news story about a guy who has worked for Mickie D's for 20 years...still making minimum wage, which in his state is 8.25/hr.

Why not become a barback, busser?
I believe people stick with any job that they don't necessarily want because of familiarity. People become comfortable with a job, they know it, they let fear keep them from ever searching for anything new, they are too afraid to fail, so it just becomes easier to stay with the familiar. Look at people who stay in abusive relationships, sure they may love, or think that they love the other person, but they also "know" the other person, they know what to expect, they become use to that person, so it's easier to stay with what you know, than to venture off and meet and learn about someone new.

I'm sure there maybe other reasons, but in my opinion, If it's a contest between staying with what you know, vs. venturing into the unknown, the former will win most of the time. No risk no reward right?

It's not the worst job in the world. I worked at Taco Bell from age 16-20. I liked it! Worked my way up to shift manager and they trusted me to run a shift by myself and be repsonsible for balancing the cash and making deposits, etc. as a 19 year old kid. It was a good experience for someone at that age.

Since adulthood, I've had "real jobs" in an office where the micromanagers don't trust you enough to deviate from a script with a client, or take a break without getting permission from management, or write you up if you are 1 minute late...screw the corporate world, the real question should be "why does anyone work in an office?"

Well, someone has to do it. Who cares, at least they are working. Someone could make a post asking why someone would choose to work in a restaurant or at a bar for a long period of time like you do. Not everyone has the opportunity and/or the intelligence to be a high power executive.

Some people work in food service or retail because they genuinely enjoy it and find it fulfilling.

I would assume though that most people in those jobs, especially food service, do them because they can't find anything better.

Fast food jobs are secure. You are unlikely to get fired once you get a little bit of training.
It is enough to pay rent in most cases.
And what I found to be a huge issue when I worked fast food... cheap food. If you stay at a place long enough, odds are you can even count on free food if you are in financial trouble.

So, it is a job that provides immediate security. Leaving is going to create risk of starving, going homeless, etc.
(And fast food places are not dumb. If you plan to leave, they cut your hours to nothing so that you quit and do not get unemployment. So quitting for a new job can be very difficult.)
