I and various coworkers have always worked additional jobs and it's never been an issue in the past. We don't necessarily tell our boss, however, it has come up when employees needed to leave (this is after a normal workday, they weren't trying to leave early or anything).

Lately, my employer has changing our hours, despite the fact that our handbook specifically says a start time of 6-9am and end time 8 hours later. Now our employer tries to shift our day to 10am to 7pm or mandatory weekends, that sort of thing. Because of that, corporate emails have been coming out stating that our first responsibility is to the firm, blah, blah, blah. I have a feeling they are going to try to ban second jobs--and a personal life if they thought they could get away with it. Quite frankly, I could care less. I can't work at a place that tries to control on my own time. I've never signed non-compete clauses and I never will. I have to be able to take care of me and my family and if that means jumping to a competitor or working two jobs, so be it.

Truth.

My salaries increased the following amounts with each job change: 15%, 50%, 37%, and 10%. I only stayed around at each job long enough for one raise and they were all between 3-8%.

I don't see why, I think we all would like to make more money.

I currently work a job making $12/hour, it's not full time, there are no benefits. I was let go from my last job so I took whatever I could.

Now I still apply for better jobs because last I heard at our current job is that they will decrease hours if there isn't enough to do. I'm already making barely enough working 30-40 hours a week. So I'm looking, and anytime a new employer has asked I've said "I want full time work and more pay, that's why I'm looking."

That and I start work at 11 so I barely get any time with my family, most of the jobs I apply for now start between 7-9 am and end between 3-5 pm, much better IMO.

I've never signed a non-compete clause and I never will, my friend is stuck at some company she hates because of that, she's not allowed to work for another company in the same industry for like 3 years after she leaves. Though I told her I don't see how that is legal.

Not only is it legal, it's very common in many industries.

Your friend shouldnt blame her company. She knew there was a non-compete clause in the employment contract when she signed it. All the other companies in her field have the same non-compete clause in their employment contracts.

I worked a 2nd job in the evening once. My full-time employer did not know. Since it did not affect their business, I didn't think it was any of their business to know.

Yep... 5% or 35%?

Easy choice.
