I am considering starting my own multimedia (web/video/photo) company as a small business. Right now I'm staying in a smaller (around 100K people) town and am unsure if it would be better to start it here, where costs would be lower, but possibly less people/clients due to population, or in a larger city, where costs would be higher, possibly more competition, and yet having a broader marketplace?
I'm in the process of choosing where to live and have not formally started the business other than taking on freelance work (I was full time in the field for a number of years prior), that's why I have the option of making the choice of location right now.
While the big city offers things such as necessary infrastructure and a larger customer base, the cost to start your business is a lot cheaper in a small city.
Find out where your "target market" is and then start your business there. You want to be close and accessible to your customers.

It is not the size but rather where the customers (target market) are.
You may go to a large city that does not have a sizable target market, or have a lot of competitors. The smaller city may have a smaller target market, but no competitors. There is a lot of variables.
Have you taken a marketing class? At least purchase a marketing book and read through it. There are also firms that specialize in finding this info for you, it would be smart to invest some resources to do this.
I used to work in product marketing, yes, and have taken marketing classes. Multimedia production as a target market? I guess if you want to do photography for Eskimos, yes you should move somewhere cold that has eskimos that want their picture taken, but for a multimedia design/photo business... ?
I'm considering cities for other reasons than just the business aspect - quality of life mostly. But some are larger and some are smaller. Photo/multimedia is very transferable so there's not really going to be an area where no one is doing it.

I've basically already moved from Seattle, more like ran away back to the Midwest. I had SAD too badly to live there, so am looking at sunnier locations now.

You worked in product marketing and took marketing classes, yet you have to post this thread and seem to not understand the concept of target markets and market segments. As I forget things as well, it would be best to go back and freshen up your knowledge of marketing.

Now you expand your reason for deciding where to locate your business; quality of life, which is a factor not relevant to your business.

I do not blame you, I lived in Seattle for a few years, could not ever get use to the dreary weather the place has most of the time; though I found the place endlessly entertaining.
