I know that some public employees' salaries are public record. what about private employees? confidential?

Once i came across a website that listed salaries of CEO's in the NY City area. my director's was listed at $396,000. then i saw a CEO listed who was only making $30,000

if employees who do not work work for public agencies salaries are confidential, do CEO's waive their privacy rights in any way by being listed on such websites?

If it is a public company it is included in public filings. That is only for the very top people in a company.

The top 5 salary earners in any company must be disclosed if the company is publicly traded or if the company is a 501(c) non-profit. Different laws address those two types of filings, but the end result s similar.

Public sector employee salaries are accessible via FOIA requests. Some newspapers do this as a matter of course and publish all state employee salaries every year or so.

Correct, though they could provide other salaries voluntarily. For any public agency it's a simple matter of doing a public disclosure request. Many of them here, including school employees are posted on the Tacoma News Tribune website, searchable by name, but always a couple of years behind.

Public employee records request are also notoriously inaccurate. Newspapers sell better if the salaries are inflated; the local paper has included the value of my vacation days in the past. Problem is, I can either take my paid vacation pays or get paid my salaries; I cannot collect both. One officer listed as the "highest paid public official in the county" actually had his 39 years of sick pay counted in his salary by the newspaper to inflate his salary. Of course, they omitted this from the story and never printed any sort of correction or retraction.

While the salary of the senior officers of a public company is posted in the annual report. The salary of lower level employees like clerks and janitors are not listed.

^This too.

My friend has an unusual name so when you Google it, one of the first links that comes up is a website that posts public salaries. I don't mind having public salaries available if someone REALLY wants to check into it---it just seems that they are far too accessible nowadays, just like addresses and phone numbers to a stalker.

Anyway, my friend and I used to work for this same public entity and my salary posted on this website was about 10K less than what I was actually making, which didn't make sense because the BASE salary starts at about 8K higher than what was posted. Pretty much all of my friends had inaccurate numbers.
