I'm 20 years old and work nights at a retail store stocking shelves, nothing special.
Anyways, I have a problem I would like to see advice on. There's about 4-6 people from a certain ethnicity who speak their language to each other often. Some mostly speak English to each other, but there's a couple who will ONLY speak their language. And it's not like they are whispering, they are havign FULL OUT conversations, not to mention ones voice is high pitched and annoying as Christ!
I have a problem with it, because it makes me and possibly others uncomfortable. I'll be walking by and they will give me a glance and speak in their language. I need to find out something for work, but I cant hear because they might be speaking about the same topic in a different language. This is absurd.
Should I complain? It is disruptive to work chemistry. I just fear the possible backlash. I'm not white, and I have 3 managers: one white, one who is the ethnicity of those speaking the language and one who is mixed.. However they are all born here and don't have a clue what they are saying.
As long as you are given your work instructions in English, what they are saying to each other really isn't your concern. Their speaking to each other in a foreign language or not speaking to each other at all should not have any impact on your ability to stock shelves.

But you agree that a workplace should be united and free from distraction right? Or is it the nature of my job that makes it pointless?

No workplace is united and free from distraction. Unless you work from home, by yourself, and even then you'll find distractions. Get an iPod and zone out.

This. It is not up to you to decide what your coworkers say to one another. It does not involve you and it is not directly work-related. Just carry on putting boxes on the shelves.

I don't see what the nature of your job has to do with it. I don't agree that co-workers speaking in a different language makes for disunity. And I don't see how it is a distraction any more than other conversation.

Is there such a thing as a united work place? I don't think I've ever seen one. Same with distractions. Being mad because other guys stocking shelves are speaking another language is not a legit distraction. As noted above, perhaps the vigor and loudness of their conversation is a distraction. It is also possible that you simply don't like it, so you are allowing it to be a distraction.
Unfortunately what they say to each other is none of your business, so you should just carry on. If they are so loud that i is a distraction, you can complain about their loudness in the workplace, but not their conversations or languages they speak. They can converse in any language they see fit.
