Right now I live in a town (pop. ~20,000) on the outskirts of the metro area of a larger city. Most of you already know I've been looking for jobs and not having a ton of luck. I don't know if maybe it's the area I'm living in?
Anyway, my family member lives and goes to college in the Orlando, FL area. She lives a lot closer to Orlando than I live to my close big city.
She said I should come live with her to see if I could find any jobs down there. Is this a good opportunity or should I not waste my time?
I read that the unemployment rate in Orlando is 6.4% and the metro area that I live in now is just a tiny bit higher than that. However, finding a part time job in that area may be easier because I could really extend my search into Orlando since I'd only live about 30 minutes away, whereas right now it's hard to find a part time job in the city because I live 45-60 minutes away.
Cool, thanks! I really want to do it (unless something else works out and I find a job). I probably won't move down there until after the holiday season. The only thing I'm concerned about is if I don't find a job down there... I don't want to overstay my welcome with my cousin.
When I'm applying for jobs down there, should I just pretend like I've lived there since I've graduated?
No need to pretend. Your story is perfectly legit - you weren't finding opportunities in your hometown and you had the opportunity to move to a larger location with more potential. End of story.
More than anything, employers will just want to hear that you WANT to be in Orlando and aren't going to jump ship and go home if something comes up.
Make sure you have a backup plan in case you can't find a job. Maybe even discuss with your cousin how long she is comfortable with you staying, if you'll be helping with rent/utilities, ect.

The first question is whether it's a BETTER opportunity.
Absent the family connection many are forced to do similarly at far greater costs to themselves.
The next question becomes whether Orlando is the best place to look regardless of convenience.

I did it back in 2011.
I spent pretty much my entire life in north FL and southeast GA til I moved out here.
Savannah metro - 360,000
Jacksonvillle metro - 1,300,000
Seattle metro - 3,900,000
Small towns, with a few exceptions, are economic zombies. Once the old people remaining die off, these places will either die or property will be so cheap that it becomes a bargain to repopulate. For the short to medium term, there remains almost no logical reason to remain in a small town if your job situation is poor.
Ok, so I really do want to move now to the larger Orlando metro area, unless I get a job by spring time.
However, let's say I do get a part time job, should I just stay where I'm at? Or should I take my chances and quit the part time job and move to Orlando anyway in search of better opportunities?
Emigrations is correct, the long term financial prospects in a small town like yours are slim and none. A PT job will always be that, until it disappears, then you are right back where you are now. In Orlando you will always have more and better opportunities.
You probably do need to move "where the jobs are."
