Costco manages it just fine, and is progressively more profitable every year.

Not quite.

The people that Costco is able to pick from out of the crowd are the same people who would soon be making
more than MW wherever they might be hired. At best, what Costco accomplishes with a starting rate marginally
higher than MW is to have the also-ran's self select themselves out of the pool and not even bother to apply there.

Nope the only people I think the tax payers should subsidize are those incapable of worker whether from a disability or age, if they are physically able to work and have the mental capacity to hold a job, than why should tax payers have to pay for them to eat?

Last I checked Costco charged $110 a year, and had costs higher then Sams Club, which is one reason the lower middle and lower class income people do not shop there.

This question falsely assumes that there is some correlation between the cost of living and the wage that a job should pay. Wages are determined by the labor market, not by the cost of living, so the above question is not one that should be asked. Even if wages were determined by the cost of living, a corporation can't possibly know how much it costs someone to live, even if all of the corporation's employees live within the same market.

Besides, any employee who wants to make more money (without changing jobs) can simply buy shares of their employer's stock, and then enjoy the dividend checks that they receive.

It is easier to rattle out terms like "livable wage", or figures like "$15/hr", then to provide a solid argument with supporting facts.

Unless one is developmentally disabled* (and entitled to the government teat by default), who could even stay in a minimum wage position long-term? Usually as long as the employee can take independent breaths and has eyebrows, the more they learn about the position, advancement is readily available.

* Perpetually laziness, victim ideation and "gimmedat-its" do not meet this criteria.

Can you imagine how lazy we would become as a country if we were guaranteed a living wage for the lowest possible job?

Logically, the living wage might be defined in America as 10 percent above the poverty line for a median family size, adjusted according to the cost of living charts used to calculate food/housing pay for military members according to where they live.

Trying to set people up to go through life flipping burgers to support themselves is silly however. It's tantamount to advocating a serf class. If you're going to do that, why not put them to work in low-skill agriculture, instead of services? We already have too many people cooking food. What we need are people making food.
