I maxed my credit card in college and skipped a few minimum payments. This shows up on my credit report. Does it matter?

it depends on the job, if it's one where a credit check is required, yes, that could affect your being hired. They will often go strictly by the credit score, pass or fail based on the number.

Depends on industry. Some say they use it to "double check employment." Others do it because it shows if employees are possibles thieves but it isn't a core competency of the job. Others like banking truly needs that.

Depending on the industry, yes. Law enforcement if you have a lot of debt and bad credit it won't reflect well on you.

That is not true. A credit check IS NOT YOUR CREDIT SCORE. It is ONLY your credit REPORT.

Also, what is the job? If it's any sort of banking/finance then yes - a company will check your credit REPORT not your credit score. During the recession, when people lost jobs and started having poor credit, alot of states started passing laws about what types of jobs could be credit checked. In my state (Massachusetts, only banking/finance type jobs OR jobs with a salary over 75K can have their credit checked.)

google your state about this!

When I was in the Army a classmate of mine was kicked out because of debt. Our job required a Top Secret clearance and the ability to get a Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance and his credit was too bad to get one.

Depends on the industry. Since you specifically mentioned just a handful of skipped payments, it probably won't be much of an issue, especially for a new graduate. Assuming you're not trying to break into an industry where you'd be handling cash or something.

not for nothing, but maxing out your credit cards and missing a few payments is totally normal in your early 20's. I know I sure did! So did alot of other people. The reason why you maxed out your credit card was probably because your credit limit wasn't high enough in the first place. What's your limit, a few thousand? Really, no big deal. at allllll....missing payments? not great, and all of those things will affect your credit score, not you getting a job.

Plenty of other Americans way older than you have maxed out their credit cards from losing a job, then a home foreclosure, or bankruptcy. Honestly, your situation really isn't that serious. Calm down! And It's really refreshing and cool to see someone so young completely aware that they have made a few credit mistakes. Most people are in denial! I didn't smarten up until my late 20's.
