So I am a fan of sending thank you notes out after interviews. However, I've found that a lot of employers these days do a phone screen, and then do interview 1 and (typically) interview 2.

At what stage do you consider it appropriate to send out a thank you note?

My rules generally are:

Email for phone screen, handwritten note for in person.

I send notes after all interviews (phone or in person). Sending an email take a couple of minutes. Do it.

You can email a brief thank you note after a phone screen because it shows interest. Nothing more than 3 sentences which gets right to the point.

I usually let the phone interviewer know my thoughts on the position, whether I'm interested after learning about it a bit more etc. In this case it would be redundant of me to write them an email of things I had already discussed with them. I will email a thank you document to them (scanned and signed) after an in-person interview expressing my interest in the position and the role I can play in their company.

NEVER

No hiring manager or HR person wants to receive these notes. I assure you that it makes them cringe.

You make sure they know how interested you are during the actual interview.

I sent one and it lead to a face to face interview

Did they tell you that your thank you note led to the interview?

Thank you notes don't even make a dent in their decision making. They probably already know who to advance forward even before the end of the interview.
