Hello, I'm looking for a start in oil and gas specifically HSE (Health, Safety, Environmental). I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science with a minor in Biology. I'm BLS First Aid CPR certified and I've been told that being OSHA certified and taking OSHA courses increases your chances of landing a job with a company's HSE department. I'm currently looking at taking an entry level OSHA 10-Hour General Industry Course. Advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

You need a degree in hse or engineering for these jobs. Also, all the companies In the oil and gas recruit entry level directly from the colleges with the hse programs and usually only take people who complete co-ops with them. It is next to impossible if you don't have access to that pipeline of recruiters. I suggest eastern Kentucky university online masters program for safet management. They have a few oil and gas companies(marathon and aera) who recruit from there. Pay just for interns is 17-20 hr.

To the OP- I am an HSE manager currently working in healthcare. Once you make some connections in this field you will learn that what jman07 posted is true. O&G really like to focus-hire and/or train from within.

I have not worked in O&G and couldn't get an interview for a Mgr position even with a Master's and certifications. Not that I would take 1/2 a cut in pay to be a tech(and "start over") but I didn't even pursue that route as it would be too much of a hit financially.

If you have the means and are patient I would add:

- Be willing to relocate- ANYWHERE
- Get another degree more HSE focused
- Get your certs
- Get into O&G in any position and expand to HSE later
