I had a question regarding employee referrals. I have a friend who has a job with a company with multiple locations, and the job I applied to is 3 hours away at a different facility where no one there probably knows him. Would saying I am friends with him and getting his referral matter as much for this other location?

I consider "name dropping" to be a negative unless referrals are welcomed/encouraged by the employer. Better to use him as a reference.
