If you are talking about income, I think both are good professions with stability and potential. I've dated two programmers, both made more than $150,000/year with stock options. One had his own tech company (didn't last long).
I am biased, I would say programmers. What they do fascinate me, they are almost like artists who can create things. I hate my CPA, so no.

I ask who is more prestigious, not who is more fascinating or who makes more. A top hooker working in Washington DC can make a million bucks a year and be very fascinating, but not necessarily prestigious.
inspiring respect and admiration; having high status.
Haha, funny lady. My question concerns the prestige of CPA as a profession in the eyes of the public, not which one of your ex-boyfriends is more "prestigious" to you personally.

In case you didn't notice, everybody answered your question based on their personal opinion. I guess I am guilty because I added a little bit of personal experiences. My bad. Sorry.
I am sorry that I didn't realize I am not part of the "eyes of pubic".

Obviously you're a CPA and are trolling for a compliment. You're a rock star! Feel better now? There isn't an answer to your question, the general public doesn't understand either job.

Why can't you just say CPA and make someone happy for once in his life. Who knows, you might find a CPA you like someday, and he might do some "work" for you that inspires your fascination.
Just kidding, by the way. I try to be funny when I can. Its necessary, believe me.

Which profession has a higher prestige in the eyes of the public: CPA or computer programmer?
Who cares about eyes of the public, the world runs on money and governments aim is to take it from you. Think of it this way.
Programmer: You make money and government takes it from you, you don't have a clue how to keep government from confiscating a huge chunk of the money you earn.
CPA: Learning how to make money is half the equation, keeping government and liberals from taking it is the other half of it. CPA's know tax code and that helps you make decisions that will help you keep more of the money you earn.
Not by a huge amount. And not within all crowds. But overall they're paid better and are more consistently educated. Those are big drivers in the perception of status.
