I have been employed at very large facility since December and called out due to me violently vomiting and having diarrhea. It came on like a ton of bricks. I called out 12 hours prior to shift, our policy is that if we are vomiting or have diarrhea that we can't come to work until 48 hours after symptoms resolved. It was only one day but I feel guilty since I'm so new.

Is it likely that I will be fired for this or will have a poor review related to this? I usually don't call in sick often. This bug is going around big time right now and others have called in as well for the same reason.

Well, I have worked places where they would fire you for missing one day in a 90 days probation. But maybe they say this to scare you into "Sucking it up" and coming in sick....

Hope nothing happens, but if they fire, go for UI!!

Makes no sense to have someone expected to come into work when they are sick. Besides them not being as productive, they are going to make others in the office sick and cause even more people to be out sick.

If you are sick, stay home, rest and get well. But the key is to keep the management there informed. Reasonable communications every day are important. If you need a doctor's note, I'd get it.

Normally you should be ok for missing one day during probation especially if you can prove it was for a good reason. I wouldn't sweat too much over it. But I can't be sure how your company works, ask your coworkers if anyone had a similar scenario.

Sounds like they wouldn't have wanted you there, since they have a policy to prevent people with your symptoms from coming in too soon.

What choice did you have?

I guess you could have gone in and vomited on the boss's desk.

I did that one time, I wasn't really sick. I was interviewing for another position, once I got. LOL They didn't know that though. I didn't get in trouble or written up.

You should be ok. Most places actually have a probationary period on paper because HR is ehem.....retarded. Probationary periods of 90 days actually exist because in Union shops this is when you would be able to join the union, after 90 days. Non Union companies heard about this cool 90 day thing and though it sounded good and put them on policy as well. Youre no more safe in a job before or after 90 days. The only true benefit to the company is they can be cheap and deny you benefits for the first three months of your job.

While we would not pay you for a sick day while on 6 month probation, 2-3 days in 6 months would not be an issue for me in passing if there were no problems with your work, tardiness, or other factors. People get sick, and I prefer to have someone stay home, especially if contagious, so I don't end up with 3-4 people sick.

We have a one year probation, but employees start accruing sick time immediately. I did have one employee who had to call inf or two days when he only had one day of sick time on the books, I just had him put another day down later on when he had the sick built up.

Your employer should know who is a good employee who wants to do a good job, and who isn't. One of my people who needs some flexibility wouldn't bother me, because they're all putting in good effort and trying to do what's right, both for themselves/their family and for the people they work with.

I wouldn't get too worried unless you have a tyrant for a boss.
