Why are folks citing job automation as a threat to workers... (employees, jobs)

Those MW jobs were never that great and can't pay a "decent" wage. In some ways, good riddance. No one is going to make a big stink about how washer and dryer machines have taken up all the jobs washing clothes.
As others have mentioned, companies often find ways to be more efficient. They were heading towards automating many jobs anyways, MW increase or not. Another thing is some employees have to be multifunctional. The guy at a FF place isn't just at the cashier. He's also cleaning up stuff, doing food prep, and various other things, so him losing a cashier job wouldn't mean he's out of a job anyways when there's still plenty for him to do.
