Why should I?
I get paid the same at the end of the day weather I do more or less work so why should I right?

Well i go above & beyond to improve my resume & work experience. It takes about 8--0yrs to become an expert in a field so I put extra hours. If you are not happy with current job you can find a better one based on current experience & expertise.

It's true. I once had a job where I worked so hard and even got an "Exceeds expectations" performance rating, yet I got NO raise! And other jobs I have had, I performed average, and got decent raises. Hard work does not always pay off. Sometimes it does. But only if it coincides with opportunity given to you and luck.

Well, you shouldn't if this specific job is the only one you want, ever. (Beware the layoff, though, as you'll be at the top of the list.)

But, if you ever want to advance, or show other employers that you have drive and initiative, you certainly should.

People that do minimal work for their paycheque often are recognized pretty quickly. Thus will never move up the chain. Showing initiative and respect for whatever comes with your job description shines..if you actually CARE about what you are doing!! It's called Work ethic and care about what you are doing!

No probs..do the minimal..and you'll be on the list for first to be Layed off when the company has to cut employee's... You obviously have NO Job Satisfactions..maybe time to look for something that does???

IF you have no passion for what you do nor interest in moving up..then either change job..find another job sector that makes you happy or just stop whining and do your minimum

But this is only true if the employee is given challenging work. Some employees are only given minimal, easy type of work, so they can only impress so much.

For me, I try to go above and beyond so that I can feel I am contributing to the success of the company that hired me. I have pride in myself and my work, so why would I not go above and beyond if it results in a more successful outcome for me and my company?

Why just do the bare minimum because that is all that is required to get that paycheck? Some people are happy with that. I am not one of those people.

going above and beyond is fine if you are compensated and rewarded for doing so. Most of the time it doesn't get you anything so you shouldn't be putting in all the extra effort. Companies by and large don't give a crap for their employees. .

Instead of putting all the extra effort in you job (For chances are no benefit), I would put it into networking and obtaining connections at work. Which in today's private sector will get you further than being some "Star Employee". The world is upside down. Its all about who you know not what you know.

You also have a better chance of avoiding the axe if it comes time for layoffs knowing someone than you EVER would being a star performer.

I've seen more top performers get laid off than I ever saw some well connected moron getting laid off when times got tough. One of the MANY downfalls in the private sector. Useless trash being kept around (And even promoted) because they were "well connected"

There is nothing wrong with rising above, but going beyond will depend on your passion for the work you're performing.

Also, I see no correlation between job performance and promotions. The one place where I did my contract at was filled with nepotism and cronyism. I witnessed friends of bosses receiving fantastic reviews and promotions despite the fact that they performed worse than the introvert guy who produced quality work for our team, but he had no interest in playing politics. I think that falls under the category "work smarter, not harder." If you can be less productive and know how to say the right words to the right people in order to move up, you're a success.

No you absolutely should not go above and beyond. Helps clear the deadwood for those of us who do.
