So, long story short. I was demoted from being a manager for a non-performance reason. Other than them not telling me it wasn't performance, I do not know for sure. There was one issue during mid year, but it was noted that we moved on from it and I asked if it was relating to that and was told no. I was told there was no black and white reason.

In fact, I was applying for a promotion prior to the demotion . I was offered an interview for the promotion (entirely different department) just yesterday.

How do I disclose that I was demoted for an unclear reason? I had top metrics with my team. My performance was marked satisfactory as of mid year.

There is no restructuring going on. Nothing.
HR has told me to call our Ethics line due to everything, and they saw my personnel file. I want to be honest, but I don't know how to spin this.

There is no way to spin it. All you can do is state what you posted. If they have any interest in you, they are going to call the person who demoted you and find out why. A demotion is serious discipline, and you should be able to know why you were disciplined.

I've been asking for over a week now. I'd like to know too so I don't do whatever it was again. I take accountability towards my actions, I just got to know what it is so I can.

I guess I can say that I was demoted since applying and in the air of transparency, I am not sure why but here's why I am still valuable to the position...

If u were a manager and don't know why were demoted thats a problem. Probably nobody liked you, you got a lot of complaint or something else. Bothering them is going to make it worse.
