Maybe this condition is psychosomatic. The anticipation of the trip and subconscious worries about the interview may have triggered it. When you had the previous episodes of it, were there stressful things happening to you?

The first time, nothing stressful at all preceeded it. The second time, it was right after I put my dog down. From what I've read, stress does not cause IBS (if that's what I have) but it can make symptoms worse.

It can with any condition or no condition, but it isn't the cause of it.

I have a friend who has very bad allergies. He told me this neighbor asked him if it could be psychosomatic. He said "It shows up positive in skin tests by an allergist".

You have to do what is going to make you the most comfortable so you can perform well.

OP, are you at least able to beg off the lunch/dinner?

I agree that specialists can be hard to get into, but OP’s primary physician doesn’t seem to be stepping up. This is a huge opportunity for OP.

I don’t disagree with your final sentence.
IBS can come like issues with not even having time to get to the bathroom from another room. At home this is merely a mess to clean up. On a plane, in an airport, at dinner in a restaurant, in the middle of an interview, is not the time to have to worry about literally crapping yourself.

A piece of advice: it's not helpful (or kind) to tell people with an illness that it's all in their head.

Have you been journaling your food to see if there are triggers that you can try to avoid?

My boyfriend has IBS and it is debilitating. It caused him to almost fail out of his Ivy League undergrad, which impacted the law school he went to and has ongoing negative repercussions to this day. I mean it when I say I feel your pain.

He has been following a low FODMAP diet for the past 3 years, and it has completely changed his life. Through the diet (which is specific to people with IBS because IBS is tied to fermentable sugars in various foods), he found his triggers. For most people with IBS, garlic & onion in any quantity (even in spice blends, broths, and marinades), beans, and gluten are triggers. We know when a restaurant has seasoned a steak with a spice blend because my boyfriend will be running to the restroom and have serious pain all night.

I tell anyone who is dealing with IBS issues (or who thinks they may have IBS) to cut out at least onion and garlic to see if it makes a difference. Those are the two most violent triggers for most people.

Good luck at your interview!
