I went to college and they wont even teach me how to drive a forklift. Why?!? I just can't figure this out. I have worked all my life here in this country with years of experience in my job and all they are paying me is $16/hr at the age of nearly 40. They just want unskilled monkeys so they can pay us peanuts. If they need skilled people soooo much(it's pretty obvious to me they DON'T), why don't they train people?

I think you're a bit off here. I mean, this is an issue of skills mismatch. You don't need a college degree to drive a forklift but you do need to be trained. Having a degree means nothing in that type of work. You are no better than any other sane candidate simply because you have a degree.

Best of luck.

A college degree means nothing in this situation. Why do you think a college degree makes you a better candidate for any job? It doesn't. A person with a year of experience driving a forklift would be better qualified than you. I have an accounting degree. If I applied to McDonald's I wouldn't be surprised if they chose to hire a high school kid over me. This should be pretty easy to understand.

Whats sad is anyone with a college degree having to resort to something like this (Nothing against Forklift operators, Ive been involved with this Line of wok for 15 years).. But this goes to show the system is completely BROKEN in this country.

No one with college education should have to resort to that type of work. They never did in previous generations, so why now? I'll tell you why.. America is a RACE TO THE BOTTOM. Hell, even Admnistrative Assistance position in many places are now requiring college degrees... Gimme a freakin break. A high school diploma a few months training doesn't suffice for that type of Job??? righhhtttt..

Pretty soon a Walmart cashier position will require a accounting degree from a state university. A job at a hardware store? We'll need a degree/certfication in designing left handed monkey wrenches.

Underemployment continues to be the real killer that no one talks about and no wants to touch with a 10 foot pole. Not Unemployment

There are no entry level jobs that require no experience, except sales and Mcjobs.

There is no solution to the catch-22. You must have experience.

Employers don't want to train you. They expect OTHER EMPLOYERS to train you (i.e. corporate welfare).

They don't want unskilled anyone. Employers don't care about skills, they care about experience, first and foremost.

Another question is why are you working at a unskilled manual labor job if you have a degree. I was a forklift driver i drove Raymond sewing reach forklifts, doubl deeps, and regular forklifts. If you don’t know what you are doing you can cause a lot of damage and can even kill someone. I was a licensed forklift driver had to take a written test, watch a osha movie. It’s the employers ass on the line if you run over someone, or know down a rack because you don’t know what you are doing. I worked in a warehouse for 30 years and can drive any forklift out there. I’ve see idiots who thought they could drive a forklift but couldn’t and cause a lot of damage. I’ve seen idiots drive a forklift right off the dock into the truck well destroying the forklift, and I’ve seen idiots put holes in semi trailers with the forklift forks.

This is a major problem. There are many training gaps that exist.

Very few employers train. They expect you to have the skills on Day 1. Where do you get the skills the first?

This is why education matters so much. Over the course of my career (it has been 10+ years since I finished higher education), there have been occasions when I've been dismayed that higher education didn't cover training in a skillset/program that employers demand employees have, but employers are not actually training. This occurrence I describe happens more often than you might think.

This is the most important line out of this whole discussion. And it gets discussed often in the Education forum. Once you cut through all the edu-babble, it comes down to the leaders in education have a thinly veiled disdain for the mechanical arts and skilled trades. They are focused on a college path for most education, which is why so many schools no longer teach shop, home ec, or basic work-world oriented courses. And if you bring up the need for such courses, you are called "racist" or "elitist" to suggest people need skills training for jobs. I've read comments that say "Why all the urgency for job training when people will have lifetime of work? They can worry about work after they finish college."
