Obviously looking to cut out the need for any vehicle for the commute. Where have you lived where the mass transit system is superior to other places, where one could truly commute without a vehicle at all? NYC, Denver, Dallas, LA... anyplace, even internationally. Please provide details on your experience.
Portland has a great public transportation system...finding a job that pay your rent/mortgage downtown might be a little more difficult. Seattle isn't bad if you live in the right area.
Of course New York and San Fran have great PT as well.
Sorry I couldn't think of any "cheaper" cities, but those were the ones that came to mind.
