TAMPA, Florida (AFP) – A Florida-based firm will soon close one of its North Dakota offices for a reason that seems unfathomable during the deepening US recession: it can't find enough employees to hire.
Sykes Enterprises, which specializes in creating and maintaining computer customer care services for corporations, opened a telephone call center in Minot, North Dakota in 1996. Last May, management wanted to increase the number of employees to 450.

Probably just an excuse to dump US employees and replace them all with cheap offshore labor. I bet Sykes didn't try too hard to find call center staff in the area. For example, if you look at the caption of the picture of the call center worker, it says, "A Filipino call center worker from the Florida, US based Sykes Enterprises works in front of her terminal."
Not suprising that Sykes couldn't find anyone. They probably pay 10 to 12 dollars an hour.
Hate to break it to you, but there are many unskilled jobs in the NYC metro area paying $10-$12 an hour and the cost of living here is probably quadruple what it is in North Dakota.

So, are you saying that the average wage for an unskilled worker in Tempe Texas is higher than 10-12 dollars per hr.....
hmmm unbelievable, since people were fighting so hard to get the minimum wage bumped up to $7.50...
In my neck of the woods they are still paying 9 to 11 dollars per hour and that is with a college education...;-)
I know the lower end or entry level jobs for unskilled in this area do start out around 12 in this area. You have to keep in mind that this area is moderatly educated due to so many Universities in the area, not to mention the largest military installation, a four year medical school, and a number of prisons, but to answer your question, yes it is higher than 10-12 even for the unskilled. I'd put it around 14-15 area.

Excellent Post!!
But Philadelpia has tons of schools, ivy league schools, several medical schools, law schools and thousands of overly educated people,,,,but if you look at the ads on craigslist phila, many employers want a college educated person, entry level person and are paying only 10 to 12 dollars. Yes, you do get a raise in the foreseeable future, but a lot of employers want the world for a song and a dance....

It's pretty obvious what the problem is. The company doesn't want to pay a market rate wage. A very big hint would be the photograph attached to said story.

So what you are saying is that Filipino women fetch a lower rate that everyone else?
I don't understand why the article had to state "Filipino call center worker" as that had nothing to do with the content of the article. Unless they are just trying to spark the "taking our jobs" rhetoric and even then it makes no sense because the area is as they called it "recession proof".
If they could afford to keep it open with 450 people why not try it in another area of the country?
