I have a degree in communication like the author in the article and did many internships. Jobs and internships in the media are so highly coveted, most don't even pay interns. I looked at all of them as two things. One, a reference and two, if it didn't pay, it was a class I didn't have to pay for and got great experience.
Just like the author, I too, worked at two National Presidential Conventions. One with the AP that was a paid position, but I took a job with a television station for the second one that didn't pay, just to get as much experience in all media as possible.
I used everything I learned in all my internships throughout my career so none of it was a waste of my time. Two internships came as a reference from my college counselor and one as a reference from one of my professors. The other I did on campus which lead to a number of 'project' internships off campus.
Seems like a total self-promoting article of completely made up content. In that this article is no different than the overwhelming majority of articles posted on Huff and other outlets like it.
The sole purpose of that article is to promote the Clarissa Wei brand and to generate ad impressions.
Easier said than done. There are simply not enough internships for every college age person out there.
Agreed. Just because they are "internships" does not mean that they are easy to get and I find that true for both paid and unpaid internships.
Now that does not mean one should not put any effort in landing an internship, just bear in mind landing an internships can be almost as difficult as landing that first "real" job.
