So maybe you need to adjust your schedule so you wake up and get started earlier in the day so that you can take care of your toileting earlier and be to work on time? Go to bed at 8:00pm and wake up at 4:00 am.

Sounds optimistic, but that wouldn't offer much of a social/family life after work, now would it? Besides, mornings are traditionally tougher on the gut and therefore others with IBS have said that the longer they can sleep past sunrise, the better they can generally manage their symptoms.

However, consistent and enough sleep is important, as irregular and insufficient sleep is definitely a known trigger (of the condition). The challenge is tossing and turning at night thinking about the morning and the possibility of being late (again...).

Have any tips, besides OTC sleeping pills or alcohol (I'm on a strict diet now, no more booze-another known trigger), on how to knock yourself out by 8pm?

Yup--get up at 4:00 am. Do that a couple days in a row and you'll be tired by 8:00pm every night.

I just went back and read the first post and the thread title, and I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not sure I anything that suggests that the OP wants to "compromise" at all. I see a lot of "I want" and "I need" but I'm not seeing where the OP is looking to compromise on her part--she only wants the concesions to come from the employer.

It also doesn't seem like the employee is very valued, and at this point if I were the employer I think I'd simply tell the OP this is the way it is, either deal with it or find another job. End of discussion.

Trazadone

I used to take that when I had trouble falling asleep. The drug allowed me to sleep soundly and I woke up in the morning on time and well-rested.

As I said previously, others do have the telecommuting privilege and of course they are able to perform at high levels. I think it would be a win win situation for us and that's why I'm still leaning towards HR. But I also think it's a risky move going over the manager's head. In a sense, a trust will be broken and I'm concerned that our relationship will never be the same. But perhaps that's just an unreasonable concern because of the stigma attached with HR - that they're just there to process hiring and layoffs.

Working from home is rarely a decision to benefit the employee so that they can be more productive/not be late for work, etc. Working from home is usually offered because of the benefit to the employer and employee.

For example, at my company I have known several people who have had to move out of the state due to the relocation of a job by a spouse or their employer. If they were top performers, many managers requested the company to allow the employee to continue to be employed but be a remote worker (depending on the job--- i.e. if the work could be performed remotely).

My mother's company allows home based workers for a call center because it is more cost efficient for the company-- they negotiate a lower wage due to the savings had by the employee to work from home. Monitoring is VERY strict and before you are allowed to work from home they do a home inspection to ensure that ergonomic standards are met, the area is quiet, etc.

The fact that your work habits and especially tardiness and wanting to work from home to eliminate tardiness does not bode well for a manager to trust that you are able to work from home.

After all, are your IBS issues going to go away? Or do you plan to log in and then walk away at will when you need to? If it is the latter, that type of thought process is NOT a reason to work from a home.
