Can someone out there tell me what it effing takes to be a beautician in this day and age of a s***hole economy, b*tchy salon owners who won't hire you if you don't have 10 years of experience, refuse to train, don't apprentice cosmetology students anymore, and remark that "things are slow" but claim they don't have time to train??
Needless to say after 3 years of bs, hired, fired, (twice) and numerous negative encounters I don't want to disclose, I wonder what it takes? It is just not worth my time and energy. I truly despise salon owners nowadays.
I have not renewed my master liscense and don't intend to.
The 'beautician' field is heavily oversaturated right now, so that could be a part of why you're having such a hard time. It seems like nearly every female I know has a cosmetology license.... and only a few have jobs actually IN that field.
There are a lot of fields that expect everyone to have 10 years of experience.
That's the economy. Changing professions is only going to mean you have even less experience for whatever job you are looking for.
Or, you have experience, which means there's an expectation that you should actually be, you know, paid for it- thus making you unattractive to potential employers. Damned if you do...
Are you kidding me? A $10 haircut and styling is worthless.
I cut my own hair for free. I style my own hair with a cheap $10 flat-iron for free. And I've done it for the past 2 years. And I've always done it better.
As for the OP. I'm sorry to hear of your experiences. I am really sympathetic. I can understand you situation.

Because they hate working there. They are the reason I started cutting and styling my own hair. And I don't even have a license. And I do a far superior job.

Being a beautician can be quite lucrative, but it depends on the area. In the area where I live many (and I mean non-shop owners) make 6 figures. If you live in the sticks, you will find it hard to get a job and/or make crappy money. If you have a change of heart about the industry, make sure your skills are actually up to par (lack of skills could be the reason you are having a lot of problems). Then I would suggest moving to a major northeast or west coast metropolitan area. If you're good, you will clean up.
