We live in western NC, our area has a 14% unemployment rate, I have been out of work since 2004. went back to school on a government program and have had 6 interviews in 4 years, my fiance has always worked sometimes 2 jobs, but for the last few years it seems like every-time it's a good job it slows down and he gets laid off, he also started school a few years ago and stopped to go back to work when I couldn't find a job, he was recently laid off again when his company decided to close down, this time there are no jobs to get, he is going to school on the TAA program and is taking Digital Effects and Animation, we are prepared to move when he finishes, but I am worried there will be no jobs then, he is experienced in hosiery/textile, electrical, and other mechanical skills, the problem- no jobs in those areas either, also we are not a young couple 45, 52 respectively, we should be heading on the down stretch to retirement instead of starting over. Right now I can't go back to work even if there was a job, my mother has been diagnosed with dementia she lives with us and I need to be here for her, my boyfriend has no problem with this but money is so tight and even though I take care of all the home duties and my mother I feel like I am not pulling my weight. I was wondering with all the 3D movies, etc... does anyone think there might be a job in the future and where. I'm not looking for miracles and thank you all for letting me vent.
Nearly all of the major movie animation jobs are in California. In the San Francisco area: Industrial Light and Magic, Pixar, Skywalker Ranch, Tippett, to name just the big ones. In the LA area: Sony, Dreamworks, Disney.
Of course there are smaller studios all over the world, and some of the greatest animation movies (harry potter, for instance) were not animated in California. But California is where most of the jobs will be.
The movie industry has been hit hard by the economy, just like everyone else. Audiences are cutting their entertainment budgets and that means less revenue for the studios, and so less money to make new movies. I know some of the major studios have had layoffs over the past year. How big, I don't know specifically, and I don't know if they have started hiring again.
Sigh... this thread depresses me. About 10 years ago I was working with 3d Animation and lighting and it was fun! Unfortunately, school, work, etc took me down a different career path. I mean, I have a healthy career, but really think going back to the fun stuff would be more enjoyable. Oh well, I'd be a fool to leave a healthy career in this economy.
Thank you all for your input, I am not sure what to do, there are just no other programs that interest him, I don't think we want to live in California for a number of reasons, so we will just keep praying and see what happens, I would love it if we went overseas for a while so maybe something will come up.

Sorry to have depressed you, I agree that right now with the economy it is foolish to leave a healthy career, but couldn't you do some freelance stuff for fun? Hope you get to have some fun again.
Video games. Electronic Arts is outside of Orlando and seems to be hiring on a regular basis. You might need to start doing QA but you can work your way up.

A few of the animation programs used in the industry have been bought by Autodesk, and they are offering an Autodesk Assistance Program, allowing anyone unemployed or suffering from the economy to download their programs for free (student version) and access to all of their online/video training courses. So you could teach yourself, or brush up your skills, if you like, at no cost.
The program has been periodically extended and is now valid through the end of the year. I believe the software downloads are trial versions good for one year from the date of download.
