As a Dutch resident, I'd say these cities:

NYC - needs no further explanation.
LA - Hollywood. Always think of LA as Hollywood
Chicago - Barack!
San Francisco - Full House! Alcatraz ,cable cars.
Miami - La Habana Nueva
Philadelphia(The Fresh Prince)
New Orleans - Katrina, Creole culture
Vegas - gambling
Detroit - criminality
Phoenix - Because it's so freakin'hot
Orlando(Disney)

Now that I'm in Japan, I notice that the most recognized U.S. cities among Japanese are:

1. New York City
2. Los Angeles
3. D.C.
4. San Francisco
5. Chicago
6. Seattle
7. Honolulu
8. Portland
9. Las Vegas
10. San Diego
11. Miami
12. Dallas
13. Detroit
14. Atlanta
15. New Orleans

The Olympics is what comes to mind when I tell someone in Japan that I'm from Atlanta. Ironically, I've met a lot people in Japan who have relatives in ATL or even have lived there.

1) New York City
2) Chicago
3) Los Angeles
4) San Francisco
5) Miami

I think these 5 cities are recognized everywhere around the world, someway or another. The rest of the US cities may be big and important but not as popular outside the U.S. than these. IMO.
