How did you never hear of it?
It's one of the most popular summer holiday destinations for Europeans.
Still shocks me that it beats cities like NYC, HK and Singapore tho.
I have heard of it because of Antalyaspor football club and it is a popular resort, but it is mind boggling if it is true that it is the third most visited city in the entire world.
What's astounding is the rate of growth of the city in terms of population. Those numbers can't be all native Turkish people, whats the #'s for the year round foreigners living in the city?
I hadn't heard of it either and I minored in Geography. However I admit I'm more into Asia and history. So it's not that surprising "Resorts contemporary Europeans like" would not have been on my radar. (I was thinking maybe Benares/Varanasi would be third as it gets Hindu pilgrims, that might give you a sense of the areas where my interests reside. Addendum: Looking it up maybe it still could be as this list's referring to international tourism not internal tourism and maybe not pilgrimages either.)
Let's not forget that Antalya is the only city in the area with a international airport. The next international airport is like 200 miles up Northwest.
That entire Southwest coast is full of resort towns/cities, Bodrum/Marmaris/Antalya.Manavgat/Alanya etc.
I've been to Antalya, Turkey. I give it a resounding 'meh'.
One reason that it may be rated "third-most visited city in the entire world" is that Russians do not need a visa to enter Turkey, and Russian airlines run constant low cost air travel from Russia to the Turkish Mediterranean, Antalya.
If you're in frozen Russia wanting an easy, low cost, visa-free warm vacation, Antalya is your best bet.

Query solved.
That's interesting about the Russians and their visas to Turkey, I had no idea.
I knew a few German guys (engineers) who did work in Antalya.
Its a hot-spot for trashy, lower-class Europeans (primarily Germans, Russians and Brits)
