Until Russia drops its ridiculous "invitation-only" visa policy, many Westerners will continue to avoid it.
This is only a formality now. Anyone can buy an invitation from a travel agent specializing in Russia. Alternatively, you can pay for a package tour, or devise your own itinerary and pre-pay the hotels (same as during the USSR), and you're set. Adventurous travelers don't let anything stop them. Not even the Russian bureaucracy, lol!
I understand Russia is a super huge country that spans practically half of the world, but come on. There are countries that are easier to get a visa from than Russia. I'd love to visit, but the visa rules just make my head explode

I can't imagine why. That's what travel agents are for. You pay, and they take care of it. Not a big deal at all. Maybe because you don't have experience with it, it seems intimidating. Find the right agency, and it's a piece of cake. It's well worth the effort, too.
Do you recommend road trips as a good way to see Russia? Renting a car and hitting the open road,sightseeing in the countryside, staying in motels/ hotels along the way or is that kind of travel difficult, especially for a non-Russian speaker?

It's not so difficult as it seems. There are many tours, sea or land. The problem with the Russian language you will not be too big, because there are people who know him. And in the Russian language, there are not a few English words.
