Can someone tell me about living in the Green Zone? What are the biggest adjustments? Are residents of the zone subject to the same social laws in the rest of the city or is it more Western? Is the Internet censored? Are women socially expected to cover their heads & bodies? I must admit that I don't really have a clue as to the social norms of the city since the US started pulling its troops. A friend of mine (who's not on City-Data) has an opportunity to work there but wants to know what it's like from someone who has lived it. Thanks!

It depends if they are going to be on a military base (yes, we still have troops there) or if they are going to be truly "In the Green". If, in the Green, then it behooves your friend to cover their head and dress as non-American as possible. Never take the same route twice in a row and always be aware of your surroundings and who is around you. Think ahead as to possible scenarios (as they unfold) to think "how can I NOT put myself in a bad situation". I lived in Baghdad for over a year and this may seem extreme and a pain in the butt, but it becomes second nature after a while. ALSO, never (ever) walk around by yourself. It is much harder for a woman there than a man. It is also important that you know basic hand to hand combat and the use of a pistol. Anyone who tries to tell you that these things are not needed are full of it and should be ignored.
