But are Argentinians civilised? The 'dirty war' was not that long ago. Reasonable people would have plenty of reasons to be wary of Argentina.

The islands wish to remain British. They have never been Argentinian (previously claimed and then abandoned by both France and Spain), and are infact closer to Chile than Argentina.

Well, I have an idea, then. If Argentina strongly feels that the 1833 borders were a superior arrangement, they can make the first move and hand Tierra del Fuego back to the descendants of the original inhabitants - the Selknams and Yaghans. (That is if they can find any survivors, of course.)

However, something tells me that Argentina's feelings on imperialism aren't quite that principled when it's that close to home. Any takers?

1982 isn't that long ago. It's a little - off - for a nation to strongly insist on the force of diplomacy when they were the last ones to try to settle the issue by force.

The real reason why Argentina Government still striving to claim the Falkland Islands is due to a oil field near the Falkland Islands. In 2017 the Falkland Islands would become a oil exporting nation. Argentina would not really bother about claiming it these days if it was not for that reason. You have to understand ... the Argentinians only talk tough when they think they can win. But what the 1982 war demonstrated is that the Argentinian military is much more adept at kidnapping, torturing and murdering unarmed civilians than they are at fighting a well armed and well trained opponent.

And that is not a future that we want for British citizens.

If Argentina thought they could win another war then they would probably invade again. But they cannot and Marlaver knows this although I can understand how rubbing that reality in might be upsetting. That is the only reason he/she talks diplomacy. He/she is kidding nobody.

But, if you are up for a fight then so be it. We have more troops on the islands than last time supported by fast fighter jets and our ships are much more powerful than they were in 1982. Also our submarines now have cruise missiles which can destroy your air-bases from afar (we will save a couple of missiles for Kirchner).

And here comes irish-bob to talk about his favourite subject .... in fact his only subject .... Ireland.

Why don't you go start a thread about Ireland instead of hijacking this one?
