Quite easily some of the best, most majestic dunes in the world, regardless of whether on a lake, sea or ocean.

Italy's littoral policy makes me cry. You guys need to preserve what you got (and there's a lot of beauty) and make beaches public. And free.
Unfortunately, it's a cultural issue. Look at the differences between average public beach and the average private beach and you will find out that the latter offers more services having umbrellas, chairs and tables on spot. For a group of youngsters this may not matter but once you have a family it starts getting difficult bringing everything by yourself to sit in a clamped, dirty spot on an otherwise shiny beach. Lidi have their own merits for how they treat the beaches.

By the way, i don't know how it is in Emilia Romagna but there are large swaths of free beaches here. It's just that they are often more difficult to access but once you find out about them there are no problems getting there. The situation is improving though but not the most environmentally friendly party (Five Star Movement) has making beaches public amongst its own objectives

The Atacama Desert in Chile has beautiful dunes as does Cape Cod.

How much time the water remains forming the little lakes in the dunes? In the Lençois Maranhenses, the lakes are formed in the rainy season from February to June, and after the rain stops, they remain mostly filled up with water until October
I am not certain but this should give some idea.

I visited those dunes in Michigan on my trip up there this summer. Sleeping bear national park is an amazing place, the views are beautiful and the height of those dunes is impressive. I have not seen these other dunes which are overseas so I cannot compare, however I think many Americans are aware of the Lake Michigan dunes and no doubt they at least compare with these other places.

There also appears to be a lot of sand dunes on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea particularly in Turkmenistan, I couldn't find any photos though, but here is some satellite imagery

Just came back from Jeri in Brazil. I don't think anything in the world can beat the Lencois Maranhenses in Brazil.

Some nice dunes in northern Venezuela and Colombia also around Coro and La Guajira.
