The press freedom in Japan has deteriorated greatly since Shinzo Abe came into office in 2012.
Quote:
The Japanese media, which are among the most powerful in the world, are free to cover what they want except “state secrets.” This rather vague category is protected by a very harsh law that deters journalists from embarking on investigations. The Fukushima nuclear disaster, the imperial family’s personal lives and the defence of Japan are all “state secrets.”
They also have pink dragons and polka-dot unicorns, I hear. Anything to the contrary is obviously a fabrication by the imperialists in the West!
are some mainstream Russian news outlets bias, sure, just like every country. But at least they report news and not to mention the thousands of independent news sites that are Russian and the fact that when the president speaks, those independent journalists are also allowed to ask questions, something most western countries can't say
That really isn't the reason why Japan ranks relatively low in press freedom. The main reason why is because the government restricts press access to those who are critical. Japan does have press freedom but those who write articles that are critical of the government lose access and privilege to those who toe the party line. This has been going on for decades but hasn't really been noticed in the West until recently (the coverage of Fukushima is one reason why it became more prominent).

I think it would probably be the USA's press freedom ranking NOLA would be scoffing at if he was raised in Russia.
All objectivity goes out the window if you use the opinion of the local media to evaluate media probity.

I know there's always been press clubs and stuff, but Abe made it even worse by passing the national security bill and stuff.
