The Police in England & Wales are introducing a practical police degree for future entrants, Academic recognition for the existing police workforce and a higher level apprenticeship which combines on-the-job training while studying towards a high level qualification. Senior Officers in the UK often have been on Command Courses and have Master Degrees already.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, just as important as police training, are independent organisations to watch over the police, and these organisations need more powers. The days of the police just investigating themselves must be a thing of the past, and the Independent Police Complaints Commision (IPCC) and the elected Police and Crime Commisioners (PCC) have allowed for further accountability and scrutiny of the police themselves and local crime rates. In recent years the IPCC has taken over all serious complaints or incidents involving the Police and all complaints where the complainant remaind unhappy with the police response replacing the polices own internal affairs and professional standards departments. As well as new powers and an increase in staff and resources, the IPCC is now also to renamed the 'Office for Police Conduct'.
