Can't remember a thing about the Olympics pre-2000. Out of the more recent ones I probably would have gone with Beijing. Thought the megalomaniac approach of the Chinese government was quite interesting.
That said, I'd only attend the Olympics if they were near my home. I'm not really interested in any of the sports (more of a Winter Olympics guy) and the amount of people in those cities during the event just seems crazy to me.
Well I did go to the 2012 Olympics in London (I was living there at the time) and the atmosphere was fantastic, so there's really only one answer for me.
I think that would be too similar to a modern-day Olympics to be that interesting to me, if we're going way back in time then I'd choose 1896.
Some of the "athletes" in the 1896 Olympics were foreign embassy staff or just random people who happened to be in Athens at the time. The men's 100 metres was won in 12 seconds, a top high school girl runner could beat that now. I think a lot of the rules were basically made up as they went along as well.
