In terms of Australian China towns it depends a lot on what you mean by “China Town”.
China town in Melbourne dates back to the gold rush era of the 1850s, when it was the cultural and economic heart of the Chinese diaspora in Victoria. So it was always very much a real China “town” before morphing into more of restaurant and commercial centre that it is today. It’s claimed to the oldest enduring Chinese community in a western country.
Sydney’s China town isn’t really the same, as the Chinese population in Sydney and NSW was always more disbursed than in Victoria. So the current China town only dates back to the 1920s as the definitive cultural epicentre of the Chinese community in NSW. Today it’s really just a commercial district, with a focus on restaurants. There was an earlier China town near The Rocks that dated back to the 1800s, but that faded away for whatever reason. http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/ev...ommunity-rocks
A lot of places in Australia have reminders of 19th century Chinese communities, most of which are not a “China Town” in a commercial sense. Most are about the day to day life of ordinary Chinese. This centre is in rural Queensland: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=H...dyArEQ_AUICCgB
Of course there are a lot of restaurant focussed shopping strips with a Chinese feel, complete with street decorations and statues. Even sleepy, conservative Canberra has a China town restaurant strip that dates back to the 1970s.
But overall, its Melbourne by a pretty big margin.
