If I have to choose one, I will go with the Twin Towers. Those if not known everywhere before, are definitely known now.
The Twin Towers don't exist any more so are not an actual structure, however the memorial is a very recognisable and well though out tribute.

If I had to pick one building it would be Sagrada Familia, as it is one of the great buildings of our modern times.

Sagrada Família - Wikipedia

However as I have already pointed out there is no defintive list and different modern buildings are more recognisable according to where you live and your view of the world, whilst some have a history of inspring others, and it is these inspirational buildings that stand apart from mere modern corporate headquarters and pften souless skyscrapers.

The hole in earth's ozone.

Although, there is a strong argument that humans can't take much of the credit for this as opposed to others making us fully responsible. I blame the cows.

I'm going to sound like I'm nit picking, but maybe I'm just a literal person but " of modern times " doesn't exclude things that no longer exist, but have existed.

After all the OP did ask " What is the most recognizable man-made structure in the world that was built in modern times?"

What about Tchernobyl, it still exists and disappeared from radars at the same time after being ultra well known

You can include the twin towers if you want to, as far as I am concerned they may be recognisable in photographs or films, but they don't exist any more.

In terms of iconic modern building that helped define a city, the Sydney Opera House would be my choice.

No argument about the opera house. It certainly defined Sydney's skyline.

But is Sydney the only city with a defined skyline? What about this one?
