What are some cities around the world that you see that will become more prominent in the near future?
For example, I have friends who really enjoy working and living Mexico City. The crime aspects are overblown by the media and they all considered the city quite safe (as long as you don't go looking for trouble in the bad areas). What they liked the most was that it was cheaper to live in compared to the US cities they come from and they are able to enjoy a better quality of life, aka not having to spend all their time working and trying to make ends meet.

Mexico City is already a prominent city. I do not see it as crime-ridden, and actually would like to visit. Mexico and CDMX - please do not stop building, expanding, and improving!
So, there are major cities in fast-developing countries that are already prominent: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, São Paulo, Mexico City, Bangkok, Istanbul, Jakarta, Shenzhen, and Kuala Lumpur. To me, Shenzhen seems the most "under-the-radar", despite its large population, large GDP, modern skyline, and high HDI. Perhaps this is because it is sandwiched between two mega-cities (Guangzhou and Hong Kong).
Many other cities may become prominent in the near future as they continue to grow in size and/or improve their standard of living and infrastructure: Manila, Rio de Janeiro, Mumbai, Bogotá, Lima, Cairo, Tianjin, Johannesburg, New Delhi, Ho Chi Minh City, Chengdu, Bangalore, Chennai, etc. These cities are known world-wide fairly well, and will continue to rise assuming there are no political upheavals or disruptions in their respective countries. Thankfully, the world overall is improving at a fast rate.
We have to define "prominent" to accurately answer the question. Presently, I would suggest there are approximately 30-35 "prominent" world cities (including those in the first list above), and the number of prominent world cities seems to be increasing with time. In the near-future there will be more prominent cities (including, likely, some from the second list, which may already be prominent). Ultimately there are no correct answers, as defining "prominence" is subjective. One could suggest, to be "prominent" a city must have, for example, a GDP greater than $100 billion, urban population greater than 3 million, and have an airport that services 20 million passengers per year. But, many cities (perhaps 100 or more) would meet this criteria. So, one must begin to make subjective determinations and consider multiple variables.
And .... needs to keep cracking-down hard on the drug trade.
The hardest crack would be to legalize it and tax it from top to bottom, like everything else, and have the proceeds trickle down the general citizenry, like legitimate taxation generally works, instead of monopolizing them among select gangsters and protective politically powerful people and law enforcement personnel.

I edited that part of my post because I didn't want to get into a debate about drug enforcement, or be negative about Mexico. In a perfect world, nobody would buy/use drugs (i.e. no market for them). I honestly wish drugs and alcohol would disappear in a big way as they just hold humanity back so much. Mexico suffers from this plague as it is a key trade route between the USA/Canada and Central/South America. I wish only the best for Mexico and its people.
Although hydrocarbons such as oil and coal will be transitioned away from as people switch to renewable energy, I think that natural gas will still remain a crucial energy source especially in poorer countries and will be a crucial fuel to use while a country works on transitioning to zero carbon emitting sources. Because of this I think that Yekaterinburg will continue to grow in prominence and will soon become a well known city outside of Russia, similar to how everyone knows of Moscow and St. Petersburg.
I agree Warsaw is a rising star and will be up there with the likes of London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Madrid.
