This was one of the reasons I wanted to start this thread. I'm curious to see what price everyone is paying, but I'm hoping to bring awareness to Americans (of which I am one) that we still have it better than most when it comes to petrol prices.
I made a choice in 2001 to sell my car and live without one. I've lived in Europe and the US since then and I make it a point to live where public transportation runs well and I can get to work and a grocery store easily. Where I live, I can walk to both if necessary.
We can all make choices to help get us through this oil nightmare. We can stop buying our lunches for work, buying coffees, buying DVD's, CDs, etc., Not only would we have enough money for petrol, we could eliminate monthly expenses we don't need and get out of debt faster.
But, in all fairness to Americans, gas is expensive when you're used to paying much less.
$3.59 seems like a fortune to Americans because we are so dependaent on our cars. $9 would never fly here in America. If gas got that high, I'd walk to work and I'd never travel. How do you put up with it?
oh and half of our petrol costs are made up of tax. There is an exise on top of a GST charged on petrol, which is effectively a tax on a tax but NOT SURPRISINGLY, the federal government won't even think about removing the GST.
