Moments like tonight again prove that this is the greatest game! Think I should start watching it again. Forza Italia.

For the same reason its not "popular" in Australia, Canada or new Zealand, i would imagine.

I can't talk for the US specifically, however if it were not for all the post ww2 immigrants that came from southerner europe, football as a professional sport would hardly exist in Australia. It was a late market entry against a host of already well established sports.

I believe football is the most popular amature team sport in Australia, however the traditional professional sports take most of the talented athletes, and TV viewers.

In America, as the US?
Why is still not very popular?

Just FYI:
Soccer in the USA is the third-most played team sport, behind only basketball and American football.

Soccer is popular in the US. They don't just care for it at the domestic club level, when when the NT does poorly. Just wait until the US national team passes a round at the WC, and many Americans will stay put in front of their TVs

Americans have more sports on a pro. Or even Civic level to play or watch than Europeans with their”football”
While the "Worlds greatest game" is being played,Americans are hiking , swimming , surfing, hunting ,birding, cycling , off road biking , snow skiing , water skiing ,auto racing in a dozen ways.and that's not even touching. the major type of sports.
That's being done while the Euros. are boozing in the pubs and kicking a semi - round ball.
Here mate have a bother pint.

^I'm pretty sure the rest of the world, or at least most countries do all sorts of those activities as well. The UK and France both participate in tons of sports well beyond footy.

Soccer will probably eventually capture the market like the NHL does now - a major sport but not the dominant one in the US. A lot of the younger generation are into it especially with Esports and FIFA.

It’s not America’s pastime. America has a different relationship to this game, clearly. With all due respect to soccer, which I think is a great sport because it brings people together from all walks of life, it’s on a different level. The MLS is popular for sure, but if you look at the racial barriers baseball overcame, it has a deeper significance to this country.

That’s just one of the reasons. The other reason is because the schedule is not as enduring as baseball or basketball. So it’s not as prevalent in people’s minds.

The 1863 thing is interesting, as the UK never really seemed to popularized soccer in its own colonies at the time either.

Australia for instance has been playing England in competitive cricket matches since 1877, if you include informal non internationally recognized ones its was 1862, for rugby it was 1909, the two countries have played each other hundreds of times in Cricket, and just over 50 times in rugby.

By contrast we have played England at soccer just 7 times, the first match football match between the two countries was 103 years after the first Cricket match, and all the meetings between the two nations have non competitive international friendlies.

I would think the USA and Canada, like Australia would have taken the sports that were introduced by the UK in late 1700's and early 1800's and either adopted them (Like cricket or Rugby in Australia and New Zealand), or turned those sports into something new and popular (Australian Football - (From Galic Football), Ice Hockey - (Field Hockey), American Football - (Rugby) Long before soccer ever became a thing.

Because it's the most boring game on earth. Every "match" has a final score if "one-nil", decided by a penalty kick, in favor of the home team to avoid a riot. Nothing at all happens the remainder of the three hours.

It.s highly popular as children's sport in the US, because every 5-year old already has all the necessary skills (running) and only need to be taught which of two nets to kick the ball toward. Parents cannot tell the difference between a good player and a bad one, so it's naturally suited to the "participation trophy"..
