Just thinking about cities that often up there in population but that are lesser known than some smaller cities in the same country.

My favourite example is Austria where Vienna gets a lot of attention followed by Salzburg and even Innsbruck.

Yet both Graz and Linz are larger than Salzburg and Innsbruck. I even had to look them up to make sure I had the right names for this thread.

Any examples from your country?

(Please do not include large suburban municipalities like Mesa, Arizona or Mississauga, Ontario.)

Very true, but... looking at the list for the UK, Newcastle is a lot bigger than I thought it would be.

Yes. If you had asked me "cold" I would have estimated it had a metro of 500,000 or so and ranked maybe 15th in the UK.

Newcastle is a sizeable city with a unique local culture.

You know about the Tyne and wear bridge?

Only vaguely. When I think of Newcastle I think of young drunk girls walking in high heels and short skirts in the snow, and people who sound Scottish (to the untrained ear) but live in England.

P London: that Tyne and Wear Bridge looks like a mini-version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
