I am a paperback (and eBook) writer - I write romance about ordinary people, sometimes in extraordinary situations.

I heard that sells, I'm afraid my mother might see it?........Remember Dobbie Gilles? He was popular, and he never got lucky....but that didn't stop him from trying. Today ordinary people in extraordinary positions wouldn't even sell.......or what do you think?

I think a "hook" is basically something that makes the reader want to continue. I believe it was Earl Stanley Gardner who said every story must begin with a mystery, no matter how small. "He dropped three Lincoln-head pennies on the sidewalk before he got in thea cab." Who was he? Where was he going in a cab? What the heck did three cents have to do with anything, and was it significant that they were Lincoln-head pennies?

OR: Jimmy looked intently across Komen Street from where he sat in a living room chair. He had recalled his mother repeatedly telling him to keep the drapes drawn, but she wasn’t home.

What's wrong with this sentance?

Just about any story will work if you leave the reader wanting more at the end of each chapter

Although any subject could be the basis for a paperback, writing has many purposes.
To be entertained, to gain knowledge, to explore different social , and economic backgrounds, to name just a few.
Along the way,I would hope anything with my name attached to it would be worthy of the reader's consideration, and time.

Bob.
