Just completed a short work with multiple meanings. No submissions editor is likely to understand even half the references that are hidden in it. If I submit it as is, it is likely to get overlooked. If I explain it, I appear patronizing or condescending. How do you handle something like this?

The conundrum of being a writer: you do not want to assume the is too ignorant to understand what it's all about, yet, you do not want to isolate anyone.

if I were in your place, I would submit the copy with a brief treatment that follows one of the [possible] meanings to give your story some clarity. You wrote the story. You know the meanings of the story. Just summarize it in a simple matter.
